Towels
Thickness. As a rule, you can expect towels that are thick and densely woven to absorb more water than those that are thin and loosely woven. Thick towels may dry you better, but they also take longer in the dryer.
Fiber. You'll see simply "cotton" as well as "premium" cottons: combed, Egyptian, pima, or Supima (a trademarked name for some pima cotton). With combed cotton, fibers are put through an additional process to eliminate short fibers and leave just the longer ones. Removing short fibers can help reduce shedding and pilling. Egyptian cotton, grown along the Nile River, consists of long, strong fibers that are particularly lustrous. Pima cotton is the American version of Egyptian, grown in Arizona, California, New Mexico, and Texas. Towels made of premium cotton generally feel softer and thicker than those of ordinary cotton.
Feel. Softness sells, but don't buy a towel based on how it feels in the store. A finish is used to achieve that new-towel feel, and after a laundering or two, the finish washes away. One way to keep towels soft is to use fabric softeners. However, they leave a waxy film on fibers that reduces absorbency. So although the towel may feel softer when you dry yourself, it may also feel as if you're simply pushing water around. Moreover, the waxy film may build up with each use of softener.
